What YL means
In amateur radio convention, YL means “young lady” and is commonly used to refer to a woman radio amateur, regardless of age. The companion term OM, “old man”, is a traditional friendly form of address among operators. These expressions are part of radio culture but should always be used respectfully and in the way individuals prefer.
An essential contribution
Women have contributed to wireless communication from its earliest days as operators, scientists, radio engineers, experimenters and organisers. The modern hobby is richer when it welcomes more women and girls as technical participants and leaders, not merely as people standing alongside someone else’s station.
Making the airwaves welcoming
A good QSO is judged by courtesy and clarity, not gender or social background. New operators benefit from patient advice, genuine opportunities to operate equipment and encouragement to pursue their own interests. That is as true of CW and contesting as it is of digital modes or building an antenna.
Where to meet and learn
Women’s amateur radio communities and general radio clubs provide support and contacts. Training, mentoring and STEM outreach help open doors that might otherwise remain closed. Everyone has something useful to contribute to the shared spectrum.
Beyond the airwaves: WISE
Welcoming YLs to amateur radio is part of a wider challenge: making technical learning and careers accessible to everyone. WISE at the IET supports progress for women in STEM and offers practical information that complements amateur-radio mentoring.
