NHARG: A Club Worth Celebrating

Nunsfield House Amateur Radio Group, a warm welcome, practical knowledge and the pleasure of learning together.

The value of a good radio club

For a newcomer to amateur radio, a friendly club can make the difference between simply owning a transceiver and truly discovering the hobby. Manuals have their place, but they cannot quite replace the encouragement of someone willing to listen, demonstrate a technique or explain the answer to a question without making its asker feel foolish.

That is why I want to recognise the Nunsfield House Amateur Radio Group (NHARG) in Derby. I have appreciated the welcome and encouragement I have received as I begin my own journey as M3JWK. Whether someone is interested in electronics, aerials, Morse, contesting or simply making their first successful contact, the people around them matter.

A club with a real programme

NHARG combines regular club activity with technical interests and opportunities to share experience. Its talks, shack activities and on-air nets are regularly featured in regional amateur radio news. That mixture of practical activity and camaraderie is valuable: it gives beginners a place to ask, established operators a place to contribute and everyone a reason to keep learning.

For current meeting details, event dates and contact arrangements, I would always recommend checking the club’s own website. Schedules change, and an up-to-date official source is better than an old timetable copied elsewhere.

A personal thank-you

I value the willingness of experienced amateurs to offer their time, share their knowledge and make newcomers feel part of the radio community. Such generosity is rarely captured in a specification sheet, yet it is one of amateur radio’s greatest strengths.

My thanks to NHARG for its welcome and for helping demonstrate that amateur radio is about people as much as it is about signals. If you are considering the hobby in the Derby area, their website is a sensible place to begin.

Knowledge is better when shared

M3JWK is guided by the idea that we can respect different backgrounds while finding common ground. A radio club puts that principle into practice. People of different ages, professions and experience levels meet around a shared curiosity and discover what they can learn from one another.
