Getting on the Air with M3JWK

Learning on-air practice, one contact at a time

A new callsign, a serious responsibility

M3JWK is a UK amateur radio callsign. The operator’s Foundation qualification is a starting point for practical experience and further learning. Every station and transmission must remain within the current licence privileges, conditions and band allocations.

Begin with listening

Before transmitting, listen to the channel and learn how local contacts are conducted. Ask whether a frequency is in use, use your callsign correctly and identify your purpose. Repeaters have their own etiquette, access details and operational arrangements.

The first contact

A successful exchange needs neither speed nor jargon. Give your callsign, a genuine signal report and your name if appropriate, then listen. It is acceptable to explain that you are a new operator. Most amateurs are delighted to encourage someone learning.

Keep a useful log

Record dates and times in UTC, callsigns, frequencies or bands, modes, reports and any meaningful notes. A clear log supports QSL cards, troubleshooting and the pleasure of remembering the people encountered.
